Testimonials
“We had the most violent and stubborn child anyone could imagine having. I don't know where you get the patience from, let alone the stamina. My wife and I were sad to see you leave. Bless you, and bless anything you touch. I have referred 2 people to you, both of which have become clients and I was happy to see you take them on. I don't want to make this long and drawn out, but I know how important positive reviews are about programs like this, as a parent you are putting your money, trust and hope into a person praying that your child will improve. You can definitely use me as a reference.”
- Douglas Keenan,
Parent of a 11 year old Autistic child
“I was glad to see that you were incorporating technology, games and traditional instruction into your sessions. My son looks forward to seeing you and he said that the snacks you offer are really good too.”
- Janice,
mother of a 11 year old ADHD student

Whether or not you choose to work with me, you should always interview any person who is working with your child. Make sure you ask thorough questions, and take notes. Your child deserves the best.
With that said…
I offer the following services. Please contact me directly with any questions: nwest@urbane-academics.com or call me at 646-580-0157
Instruction:
I offer a cognitive approach to my instruction. My goal is not to have your child dependent on me for all of their educational needs. My goal is to make sure your child learns the skills that allow him/her to regulate and participate in their own education, so that they can continue to learn and improve without the constant need of assistance.
I offer both private and small group instruction. All children are fully assessed, and will receive their own plan of action. My sessions are based on a cognitive, remedial (poor math and reading skills) and therapeutic approach. I make use of several programs, as well as your child’s likes and dislikes and your goals for your child. I work with children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, PDD-NOS, Aspergers, APD, CAPD, Dyslexia, Hyperlexia, LD (learning disabled), Developmental delay (as well as some disabilities not listed) and children who do not have learning disabilities. I also work with children who do not have learning disabilities, but who are several grades behind in school. All children, whether they are instructed individually or in a small group setting, will receive an individualized plan of action, and all of their materials are provided as part of their instruction. My office is in New York City, NY.
Assessments/Evaluations:
Informal and formal evaluations are available for all, no matter their age. Assessments and Evaluations are developed to determine the cognitive, reading and math skills, speech & language skills, and fine and gross motor skills. Assessments and evaluations are also developed to determine if there are any learning disabilities. Testing is usually completed in office, and may include a classroom/school visit to fully determine your child’s needs. Testing can determine if your child has ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia or Autism (PDD) etc . These evaluations are made to be used for your family’s own personal use or these evaluations can be used for IEP or 504 Plan meetings. Other testing is available, if you do not see your particular concern addressed here, please contact me directly.
Special Education Advocacy:
A special education advocate should be used to assist parents and families to find, and confirm special education services. A special education advocate is not a lawyer, and cannot provide legal advice. The good thing is, a good advocate can make sure your child gets the services he/she deserves, without going to court (almost 85% of cases do not require due process). As a special education advocate, I work with families all over the United States, not just in New York. You can expect that I will fully evaluate your case, read all documents and provide a thorough evaluation for your child (NYC and surrounding areas only).
I provide the following services:
- Develop IEP and 504 Plans
- Write the appropriate letters pertaining to your case
- Make your knowledgeable, and explain the law
- Attend IEP meetings
- Provide a full and complete evaluation for your child
- Research and suggest appropriate therapies for your child
- Request your child’s educational records
- Differentiate between the NCLB, FAPE, IEP, 504 Plan etc.
- Assist with the development of positive behavior plans
- Evaluate the meaning of assessments and reports, and use that information to provide the appropriate services
I cannot possibly list all of the advocacy services I provide, so if you have a specific question, please do not hesitate to send me a message. Additionally, even if you do not live in the NYC area, I can still provide all of the advocacy services listed above, including attending meetings via telephone, and video (Skype).
